Through recent times, real-time post-production of high-definition material has been extraordinarily expensive because it has been performed on uncompressed sources - up to 150MB/sec per stream. Compression engines have been adopted in the majority of standard definition post-production systems, but for many good reasons compression has yet to make an impact in high-definition post-production. In response, a variety of off-the-shelf compression formats have recently been proposed for HD post-production editing, including: MPEG long- GOP, MPEG I-frames, DVCPRO HD, and motion JPEG. Unfortunately, none of these formats were designed for post-production - they were either designed for capturing video on tape (DVCPRO HD), distributing video (MPEG), or still images (JPEG).
