Arkansas State University was founded in 1909 as a regional agricultural training school. Arkansas State University wanted to create a single network that would bring its separate campuses together. To do so, university administrators considered both traditional terrestrial wire (T1 or other high-speed telecommunications connectivity) and wireless technology. Almost immediately, they opted for wireless. After a brief trial with another provider, Arkansas State selected Cisco Aironet wireless technology - in part because they already depend extensively on Cisco technology: the university's infrastructure employs Cisco Catalyst 6513 backbone switches, Catalyst 3500 and 4000 Series XL wiring closet switches, Cisco PIX firewalls, the Cisco Intrusion Detection System (IDS), Cisco CallManager, and Cisco Unity - the Cisco unified messaging system that links various media.
