Maps can be created with SAS by using the GMAP procedure, one of the PROCs available within SAS/GRAPH. Recent versions of SAS/GRAPH enable users to create maps in which map areas can be hyperlinked to additional information (drilldowns); additional information can be provided to map users when a mouse cursor passes over a map area (pop-ups); and a time dimension can be added using animation. This paper first introduces you to the basics of creating maps with SAS/GRAPH. The paper then focuses on choropleth maps, which are two-dimensional maps that use color or fill patterns to represent data in map areas.
