Leased lines or fiber? When you're given no other choices it often comes down to an unhappy compromise. On one hand, adding telco circuits is convenient enough, but then you're looking at years of costly lease charges for less bandwidth and reliability than you wanted. Fiber on the other hand will give you everything you need, but then delivery time could be way out there - and so could the cost. Enter wireless. Wireless can bridge these trade-offs with better reliability than leased lines and "fiber-like" performance for a fraction of the cost. This paper begins with a straightforward talk about bandwidth and reliability. In this paper wireless solutions are sorted into four categories (free space optics, spread spectrum, unlicensed wireless and licensed microwave) and it takes a look under the hood.
