Enterprises such as Boeing and DaimlerChrysler increasingly depend on the elegant power of portals to help their users access a plethora of tools and information efficiently, without needing to know where the content came from. To address the appeals of customers, Sun Microsystems and IBM each submitted a JSR to the Java Community Process (JCP) program, independently, near-simultaneously, and without knowledge of each other, proposing a standard API and spec around the portal platform. JSR 168 Portlet Specification defines a set of Java APIs to enable interoperability between portals and portlets. Sun has been very active not only in co-leading the expert group and writing the spec, but also in building its own implementation of JSR 168 to address customers' requirements.
