Location-aware services will play an important role in the future and the technology to build the underlying infrastructure of such location-aware services already exists. This paper lists typical requirements of proactive cell-based location-aware services and shows why it is hard to build such services using commercial-o - the-shelve hardware. Three networking technologies are evaluated regarding their capability to enable such services without extra positioning hardware. These three technologies are: global system for mobile communication, 802.11 wireless LAN, and Bluetooth wireless technology.
