Southern Cross Healthcare is comprised of two organisations that focus on the health sector in New Zealand. The first created is the Southern Cross Medical Care Society with more than 800,000 members. The need to do more with less was the reason behind Southern Cross Healthcare's decision to migrate its Oracle infrastructure to Linux. Shifting to open source enabled a reduction in IT operating system support costs by 30% and improved the reliability, availability, and scalability of its core business systems. The move played a significant role in helping Southern Cross Medical Care Society reduce its overall operating expenses by almost 11% during the 2003-2004 financial year.
