A software radio is a wireless communications device in which all of the signal processing is implemented in software. By simply downloading a new program, a software radio is able to interoperate with different wireless protocols, incorporate new services, and upgrade to new standards. This paper provides an introduction to software radio and the advantages that it can provide in a world of rapidly changing standards. The flexibility of an all-software approach leads to systems that can change dynamically. For example, a GSM handset could change its equalization algorithm dynamically based on the quality of the received signal.
