Faced with serious performance and capacity problems, Smead Manufacturing began investigating the cost to upgrade the existing UNIX/Oracle platform that ran its mission-critical Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Human Resources (HRMS) applications. When the initial estimate came back at $6 million, Smead started evaluating alternatives, and decided to switch to the Microsoft platform. Total costs including staffing were only $1.5 million, enabling the company to achieve a 75 percent reduction in total cost of ownership - enough to pay Smead's entire IT salary budget for the next three years.
