Bluetooth is a standard for short-range radio communications, originally developed as a cable replacement to connect portable devices. It uses the Industrial Scientific Medicine radio band (ISM) 2.45 GHz and Frequency Hopped Spread Spectrum (FHSS) medium access. This paper aims to analyze the reliability and robustness of the Bluetooth technology in industrial environments. A brief overview of this short-range radio standard is first presented, followed by the study of some environmental field tests and the discussion of its potentials for specific industrial applications.
