Every Bluetooth device must be "paired" with another before they can communicate. The paired devices establish the appropriate level of trust by authentication mechanisms and the optional use of encryption. The concept of virtual linking can add significant performance and usability benefits to Bluetooth systems. This paper describes the basic principles and gives examples of how the techniques can be used.
