WiMAX as defined is two standards. One standard is for "fixed" usage, and another standard is for "mobile" usage. The fixed standard is beginning interoperability testing in Spain. This standard is further along, and will probably be used as backhaul (the connection from base stations to core networks) for WWAN networks as well as for point-to-multipoint applications. The mobile standard for WiMAX was supposed to be standardized in late 2004, but this has not happened yet.
