All too easily, more sophisticated application solutions and greater technological diversity can translate into radical increases in IT complexity. This effect has undermined the strategies of many large industry players. In mid-sized companies with limited resources and small IT staffs, the impact may be more serious. The key is to minimize the complexity of underlying infrastructures. This paper deals with one method of achieving this: the use of IBM eServer iSeries systems. Specifically, the paper addresses the cost implications of employing iSeries systems and conventional Intel processor-based servers for critical infrastructure initiatives.
