In 2002, U.S. Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham designated the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL) as the lead laboratory for nuclear energy research in this effort. As part of the Generation IV nuclear energy systems initiative, secure collaboration (both nationally and internationally) for INEEL researchers is crucial. INEEL needed significantly more compute resources to accommodate the increase in complexity of their scientific models and obtain more detailed results, faster. The end-to-end high performance technical computing solution from Sun gives INEEL the ability to complete two trillion (2 Teraflops) floating-point operations in a one-second.
