Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are becoming increasingly popular. They are envisioned as providers of pervasive and user seamless communication in future generation wireless technologies. Nowadays, IEEE 802.11b is the dominating WLAN market standard. Most of the current 802.11b research activities assume ideal channel conditions. This paper presents an analytical model of the IEEE 802.11b throughput performance in noisy channels. The model covers all four transmission rates defined with the IEEE 802.11b standard. Furthermore, the paper explores circumstances under which maximum throughput can be achieved. Benefits of using adaptive packet length selection for delivering the best throughput performance in various channel conditions are investigated.
