Because of the low equipment cost for wireless fidelity APs (access points), the legitimate question arises: Is it worthwhile spending money to engineer the number of APs needed to cover an office area, or is it more cost effective to estimate the number required, a so-called ad hoc approach? This paper compares the actual deployment and design of an 802.11b WLAN (wireless local area network) in an office building using the two approaches. The analysis compares the aggregate throughput and costs, using both an ad hoc installation and an engineered network.
