New real-time and streaming services require guaranteed throughputs, low delay and low jitter to ensure an enjoyable user experience. Thus the access network must meet a number of QoS-related requirements. This paper describes how Alcatel sees QoS being deployed in broadband fixed and wireless access networks to meet service requirements. First it describes a solution for DSL access networks, showing how QoS techniques can be used in conjunction with network planning and resource admission control. Based on this solution, the paper then describes how to integrate GSM/GPRS services over a packet-based network using a Wireless LAN or Bluetooth access network.
