Wireless communication standards are evolving rapidly. Operators and system suppliers have inhomogeneous philosophies when it comes to providing a multitude of mobile communication standards, such as UMTS FDD, HSDPA, HSUPA and WiMAX. To enable the operators to reuse their existing infrastructures and sites, Alcatel is proposing to support the various air-interface standards using a single base-station architecture. This evolution, which is based on Alcatel's Node B product enhanced with a software defined radio approach, will expand operations by making very flexible use of multiple frequency bands and multiple standards using common hardware. Alcatel is currently investigating various multi-standard / multi-band approaches and architectures.
