The paper explains how to optimize DSL for multimedia services in terms of speed, quality and stability, while reducing operating expenses in both the short and long terms. Operators want to retain and attract customers and increase average revenue per user by introducing new multimedia services, requiring higher DSL speeds, quality and stability. Consequently, new xDSL technologies are being deployed in combination with new fiber scenarios (Fiber to the x; FTTx), so deployment complexity and operating expenses can inevitably be expected to rise. At the same time, increased competition is driving profit margins down. Hence, operators are being forced to reduce operating expenses to maintain profitability.
