New data services, interactive TV and evolving Internet behavior will influence mobile data usage. Long sessions in always-on mode will force a re-think of radio access technology to achieve the required - but not easy to attain - capacity (Gbit/s/km_) at low cost. The ideas presented in this paper can increase capacity by a factor of 500 with regard to expected cellular deployments. Coverage will be based on large umbrella cells (3G, WiMAX) and numerous pico cells interconnected to provide the user with seamless high data rate (several Mbit/s) sessions. The 4G infrastructure operator will mix several technologies, each of which has its optimal usage.
