In 2001, MedPointe, a specialty pharmaceutical company, acquired laboratory operations from the long-established Carter-Wallace pharmaceutical company. The company's existing network infrastructure was based on Microsoft Windows technology, while Carter-Wallace had been using proprietary UNIX-based systems to run Oracle databases. One immediate problem was that the company didn't have UNIX experience and skills in-house. The company moved its systems to a clustered configuration that combines Dell PowerEdge servers, Oracle Real Application Clusters, and Microsoft Windows Server.
