The Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences of the University of Michigan needed a sophisticated search engine capable of identifying geomagnetic data repositories and then retrieving data for scientific analyses. Using two Dell Precision Workstations interconnected to work as a RAID system, the team developed a Virtual Global Magnetic Observatory network. VGMO.NET is growing. More and more remote sites are included in the access via the University of Michigan portal and a few other institutions have installed the stand-alone VGMO application to use with either geomagnetic or other data.
