The purpose of this paper is to propose the level of support provided by ISS for the different operating systems and the logical sub-groups of PCs on the campus network. Operating systems for different hardware platforms are constantly evolving. From time to time manufacturers will cease supporting older operating systems. Additionally, software developers will only guarantee their product on one or a narrow range of operating systems. There is also a relationship between the hardware capabilities of the desktop workstation and its ability to run an operating system. This policy recognises the diversity of desktop operating systems used at Lancaster, and that currently the majority of staff and students use one of the Microsoft Windows operating systems.
