This paper will assess the key considerations in selecting among alternatives for PON, and propose a PON deployment strategy which favors time to market and system evolution. An overview on industry and technology trends is first discussed followed by a discussion of service evolution and its implication on access requirements. A framework is introduced to compare the service capacity and cost performance of various BPON and GPON implementations in the context of delivering triple play services. The paper concludes with a cost benefit analysis, and a proposed PON deployment and evolution strategy, that will help to drive profitability and minimize risk.
