Until recently, Spoon Interactive Arts, located in Manila, Philippines, had developed mobile games exclusively for the Java platform. When informed by a local carrier about significant download activity for a fighting game using Java MIDP 1.0, however, the company's business director suggested development of a similar yet more advanced concept. The developers approach most projects with a sense of humor, so the team decided to create a spoof of a popular fighting game and infuse it with local flavor. This was how Astig Fighter was born. In the process of bringing this game to life, some technical and business challenges forced the team to consider shifting from the Java platform to a native C++ application for Symbian OS.
