National Semiconductor (National) is the industry's premier manufacturer of high-performance analog devices and subsystems. They needed to reduce the IT management burden caused by the unplanned proliferation of servers; increase utilization of servers; facilitate disaster recovery and business continuity; reduce operational costs; and improve cycle time capabilities. The solution was to implement VMware ESX Server on Dell PowerEdge 2650 servers running Microsoft Windows-based applications; migrate applications from stand-alone servers to virtual machines in three phases; deploy virtual machines in pairs on separate physical servers to enable failover between main data center and a remote disaster recovery site.
