The Internet is a global communications network that operates as a data pipeline. This network consists of thousands of interconnected networks linked together over standard protocols to provide Web sites, chat rooms, email, etc. The Internet has changed the way people connect to information, and has opened up a new world of electronic commerce. Yet still a majority of today's Internet exists as Web sites serving pages to individual requests. Potential exists to use the Internet in new ways - connecting applications to applications over a multitude of Web-enabled devices.
