Wireless service providers (WSPs) have spent over 120 Billion Euros on UMTS licences. In addition, WSPs will need to invest in UMTS infrastructure and also the systems that enable the UMTS networks and services to operate efficiently. This white paper will focus on the UMTS path to 3G. UMTS is synonymous with W-CDMA and 3GSM. The standards body for UMTS is the 3G Partnership Project (3GPP). There are currently four releases of UMTS defined by 3GPP.
