The Dutch government must become more accessible. In 1999, this conclusion led to the launch of the Dutch portal web site www.overheid.nl. This paper describes the aims and the development of this web site. The Netherlands has some 1600 government organizations, ranging from ministries at the national level down to local authorities. In addition, there are many government-associated organizations such as libraries, museums and (health) care institutions. By the end of 2003 all 1600 organizations will be represented on the Internet with a web site - but this does not in itself mean that the Dutch government is really accessible on the Internet.
