According to a recent trade analysis by Davis, European labour market distortions confer high wages on industrialised trading partners such as the US while the associated unemployment is entirely European. The elemental model used implies that the Asian emergence shock was absorbed in the north entirely in the form of additional EU unemployment. This paper establishes that these conclusions are not robust when the elemental trade model is generalised to include differentiated products.
