During the last few years we have seen a remarkable growth in mobile communication. As this trend continues the consumers will demand the same service spectrum and quality regardless of whether they are communicating from a wired or wireless terminal. IP will be the main bearer, and control and management functionalities as well as the mobility and security aspects will evolve towards deploying IP only technology. To fulfill the IP vision it is of crucial importance that the new access networks conform to the overall IP technology developments regarding QoS, security, management and mobility aspects. One of these new access networks is the UMTS (Universal Mobile Tele-communication System) access network.
