Virgin Mobile is one of the fastest-growing domestic wireless services. It achieved its tremendous growth by focusing exclusively on the youth market and providing highly configurable and customized services. The challenge it faced was how to improve delivery of numerous new services - all of them extraordinarily customizable - while driving down internal IT costs. To reduce costs while improving performance, Virgin Mobile migrated to BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1 and deployed the software on Red Hat Linux running on Intel Xeon processor-based servers. This hardware configuration cost significantly less than comparable RISC-based servers and produced substantial performance gains.
