Federal regulations targeting private financial and personal data affects almost every enterprise, with requirements designed to protect and secure information in all forms. The content of internal and outbound e-mail presents serious risks to compliance. While the convenience and power of e-mail has simplified business communication for every type of organization, each unencrypted e-mail risks exposing sensitive data – from confidential financial and product information to legal contracts to files that include personally identifying information such as Social Security numbers, birthdates, credit card numbers and bank account numbers.
Enterprises can simplify the process of encryption by applying e-mail policy at the gateway. By automatically determining and applying the appropriate type of encryption based on the message contents and/or recipient, gateway encryption makes the process transparent to end users and simple for administrators. Ideally, gateway encryption solutions eliminate the need for business partners to have a similar solution deployed. To guarantee both a secure and interoperable encryption solution, multiple encryption options should be provided in a single platform, reducing the need for IT staffs to manage multiple products.
