Pity today's network manager, who must develop a strategy to counter network attacks from outside as well as from within. Currently, the trend is toward replacing a series of isolated network appliances with an integrated campus network security system built around third-generation switches operating at wire speed. The keys to effective security include a powerful policy engine closely tied to all security devices, integrated network management of security functions on both wireline and wireless network segments, and effective authentication, authorization, and intruder detection, including quarantine of unreliable hosts. Enterasys Networks and Alcatel lead switching vendors when it comes to overall security functionality.
