Performance management is likely to remain a central feature of senior police management now and into the future. It is clear however that for this work effectively the performance regime will need to be a great deal more sophisticated than it is at present. The development of future performance indicators will need to reflect more adequately the differing environments within which police commanders work within the BCU. It is also the case that that in order to begin to achieve the targets which increasingly dominate performance regimes police commanders will need to be given the powers to match the responsibilities they have been given within the BCU.
