While there have been several analyses of the intergenerational relationship in the United States, few take a focused look at non-linearities. Taking existing studies on the average degree of intergenerational earnings transmission as a point of departure, the paper examines non-linearities in the relationship between the earnings of fathers and sons and fathers and daughters in the United States using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. The goal of this paper is to document whether non-linearities in intergenerational transmission of earnings from fathers to sons and fathers to daughters exist.
