As part of its mission to inform the European e-government community about key issues of common interest, the eGovernment Observatory has performed a research on the link between e government and competitiveness. A number of initiatives have been launched in recent years, at national and international level, to better understand the link between e-government and economic performance, in particular with competitiveness, but the correlation between the digitisation of public services and a more competitive economy remains complex and elusive. This paper is intended to clarify the main issues at stake and to provide a sound basis for further work and discussion on the impact of e-government on competitiveness.
