Middleware is a critical component for the development and porting of parallel-processing applications in distributed high-performance computing (HPC) cluster infrastructures. This paper describes the evolution of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) standard specification as well as both open source and commercial MPI implementations that can be used to enhance Dell HPC cluster environments.
