Health sector IT Managers around the country greeted 2005 with some trepidation. The reason? On the 1st January the Freedom of Information (FoI) Act became law in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This means members of the public can now request access to any information health organisations may have concerning them. Research has found that three-quarters of public sector departments had no predetermined budget for tackling FoI compliance, despite it being ranked as more important than the 2005 e-government targets, second only behind the Data Protection Act in terms of overall importance.
