When it comes to business relationships, the one between Sun Microsystems, Inc. and Ford Motor Company has always been solid. Like other companies in the automotive industry, Ford was asking its IT departments company-wide to cut costs, while still ensuring the company's standards of quality remained high. Sun's sales and technical leads proposed a Grid Computing architecture with a dual-CPU desktop environment that could be used for interactive and compute tasks during the day, with all CPUs focused on compute jobs nights and weekends. Ford decided on 500 or so Sun Blade 1000 workstations as an excellent solution, with their support for dual CPUs at an extremely aggressive price. But the technology that made all the difference was Sun ONE Grid Engine software.
