Slammer exploited a six-month-old vulnerability in the Microsoft SQL Server, affecting Windows NT, 2000, and XP systems running unpatched Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE) 2000 applications. The Slammer Worm slowed the Internet to a crawl by generating massive levels of network traffic as it scanned IP addresses. Within minutes of detection of the Slammer Worm, Symantec Managed Security Services swung into action. Analysts on duty at Symantec's security operations centers (SOCs) immediately called in additional personnel to implement a plan that ultimately protected customer networks from severe damage.
