Blended Instruction: Adapting Conventional Instruction for Large Classes

This paper provides a discussion of issues confronting institutions of higher education in their efforts to reduce costs and improve the quality of instruction for large classes. Blended learning is described with examples of technology applications referenced to existing courses at various universities. A discussion of cost reduction strategies is included. The paper concludes with a summary of the types of adaptations and alternatives that instructors may use in teaching large classes, consideration of reusable course content, and the relationship of technology to instructional costs.
