When the State of Louisiana's Board of Regents invited its universities and colleges to participate in the decision to select a course management system in 1999, Northwestern State University (NSU) already had a great success story to share. NSU had been offering online classes since 1995, and had been running on the Blackboard platform since its initial launch in 1999. A team from NSU attended the presentation to learn more about the potential of online education and to share its own early successes. Based on feedback from NSU and all of the attendees, the Board of Regents supported the campus-based recommendation by funding the Blackboard Learning System-Basic Edition (formerly known as Blackboard 5 Level One) as an entry level solution for all interested campuses.
