The network management team at ABC Services had a major problem: their frame-relay managed service could no longer effectively support their expanding number of branch offices, which had recently passed 500. Faced with out-of-control bandwidth costs and a complete inability to defend the network against blame for virtually every application performance problem, the network team decided to insource the network and migrate to an MPLS service from a major carrier. But the management difficulties remained. The network team still had little or no visibility into the causes of application performance problems and still couldn't defend the network. The team evaluated a number of network management solutions, eventually focusing on a short list consisting of the Network Associates Distributed Sniffer, Compuware Vantage, and the Network Physics NP-2000. As the team looked deeper into the NP-2000's Business Groups, they realized that this function also held the key to increased visibility into their MPLS backbone.
