Konica and Minolta merged in late 2003 in order to attain top ranking in the global office equipment market. Their objectives, beyond the network integration, included being able to differentiate and prioritize various applications (such as voice service, e-learning, or SAP sessions), to implement new Disaster Recovery initiatives, and to have a more flexible and open infrastructure for any future merger activity. Alliant Technologies, an IT solutions company specializing in network engineering, was hired for an assessment of the Konica Minolta WAN. Alliant recommended a move toward MPLS technology (Multi- Protocol Label Switching).
