This paper presents the architecture underlying the creation and operation of a very large digital oral history archive and the problems of providing specific access to such a mass of data. The paper then outlines a research agenda that grew out of these problems, covering issues in user requirement studies, automatic speech recognition, automatic segmentation, classification and summarization, retrieval, and user interfaces.
