Architecturing Self-Tuning Optical Networks

As the optical transport core becomes increasingly more re-configurable, the network intelligence is moving away from the edges making obsolete the view of the core being a "dumb, static transport" layer. This intelligence is derived from optical cross-connect switches (OXCs) networked via high-speed DWDM systems that allow for rapid point-n-click provisioning of end-to-end wavelengths. In turn, this has shrunk optical provisioning times from weeks to minutes. This paper describes Mobius, a system that improves network efficiencies of an IP-over-Optical network by exploiting this re-configurability to create a self-tuning optical network.
