"One-to-one computing" describes an educational scenario in which every student, teacher, and staff member is provided with a portable laptop, notebook, or tablet PC for use both in the classroom and at home. Although many such programs are still in their infancy, one-to-one computing initiatives have already been shown to benefit K-12 students by:

  • Improving their learning environments
  • Encouraging greater communication between their parents and teachers
  • Developing their computer skills
  • Creating equal educational opportunities for economically disadvantaged students
This Center for Digital Education white paper, underwritten by Gateway, builds a strong case for the implementation of one-to-one computer initiatives in K-12 schools, and walks educators through the multitude of issues they should consider when determining the feasibility of one-to-one laptop programs for their schools.
