As Washington's response to the recent scandals at Enron, WorldCom, Tyco International, Adelphia Communications and Global Crossing, the Act sweeps broadly in transforming the public accounting industry and reforming corporate disclosure and governance practices. While the Act applies primarily to publicly traded companies and the accounting firms that audit them, it may lead over time to the establishment of "best-practice" principles for private companies, regulated financial institutions and smaller accounting firms.
