This paper compares activity theory (AT) to distributed cognition theory (DCog). The paper defines four attributes important in theories: descriptive, rhetorical, inferential, and application power. The paper explores the relative strengths and weaknesses of both theories with reference to these attributes, and with respect to what each theory does for CSCW. The paper touches on whether and how AT and DCog help with design.
